Christmas & New Year 2012

Merry Christmas and a Happy and Very Prosperous 2012 to Everyone

FROM YING
you may have seen this before, but it's nice to see it again :)

I think we could all do with a bit of luck.

Irish Luck

His name was Fleming, and he was a poor Scottish farmer. One day, while trying to make a living for his family, he heard a cry for help coming from a nearby bog. He dropped his tools and ran to the bog.

There, mired to his waist in black muck, was a terrified boy, screaming and struggling to free himself. Farmer Fleming saved the lad from what could have been a slow and terrifying death.

The next day, a fancy carriage pulled up to the Scotsman's sparse surroundings. An elegantly dressed nobleman stepped out and introduced himself as the father of the boy Farmer Fleming had saved.

'I want to repay you,' said the nobleman. 'You saved my son's life.'

'No, I can't accept payment for what I did,' the Scottish farmer replied waving off the offer. At that moment, the farmer's own son came to the door of the family hovel.

'Is that your son?' the nobleman asked.

'Yes,' the farmer replied proudly.

'I'll make you a deal. Let me provide him with the level of education my own son will enjoy If the lad is anything like his father, he'll no doubt grow to be a man we both will be proud of.' And that he did.

Farmer Fleming's son attended the very best schools and in time, graduated from St. Mary's Hospital Medical School in London, and went on to become known throughout the world as the noted Sir Alexander Fleming, the discoverer of Penicillin.

Years afterward, the same nobleman's son who was saved from the bog was stricken with pneumonia.

What saved his life this time? Penicillin.

The name of the nobleman? Lord Randolph Churchill .. His son's name?

Sir Winston Churchill.

Someone once said: What goes around comes around.

Work like you don't need the money.

Love like you've never been hurt.

Dance like nobody's watching.

Sing like nobody's listening.

Live like it's Heaven on Earth.

AN IRISH FRIENDSHIP WISH:

May there always be work for your hands to do;

May your purse always hold a coin or two;

May the sun always shine on your windowpane;

May a rainbow be certain to follow each rain;

May the hand of a friend always be near you;
May your heart be filled with gladness to cheer you.

and may you be in heaven a half hour before the devil knows you're dead.

FROM WIWAT

Dear Ying,

What a superb Merry X'mas and a Happy New Year yarn!.
I thoroughly enjoyed that, really.
Thanks for what you have given us - food for thought!.

And that reminds me of a quote Sir Winston Churchill once said:
"We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give."

May you all have something to give always, as ever before,
for the coming New Year - and very many years more.

FROM DUA

Dear Friends,

Friends in Sydney,

Looks like my plan to visit Australia has been firmed up. I will be in Brisbane during the 2nd week of Feb and in Sydney for a few days during the 3rd week of Feb. I will provide you with a more definitive itinerary a bit later. Hope to see many of you there. (Jierasak, will you come down to Sydney?).

In the meantime, I have the following idyll:

All the leaves are mostly gone,
And the sky is always grey,
I went from my house forlorn,
To a nearby Starbucks Café.
There I composed this little idyll,
For all my CP friends,
The latte there made me feel,
Acute lactose intolerance.
So homeward bound I raced,
To rest my caffeinated brain,
Simply hoping for the best,
My thoughts began to wane.
At the moment with a still OK self,
I wish all my friends dear,
A prosperous 2012,
And ….
A VERY HAPPY NEW YEAR.

Best wishes for 2012,
Dua.

CP 60th Anniversary - From Chuvej

Dear All,

Six of us CP'69 joined a party of about 50 people at the CP 60th Anniversary Dinner Reception at the official residence of Australian Ambassador to Thailand, H.E. Mr. James Wise. At the opening speech the amb said one of the reasons he chose 1 November 2011 was because it was an auspicious day 1/11/11. It was also the first Tuesday in November, the Melbourne Cup Day. He recounted how CP scholarship program helped introduce Australians to Asian students like us and gradually reshaped the thinking of Aussies about their northern neighbours. He also mentioned how the best-loved race horse Australians have ever known was named PharLap. The food, catered by Dusit Thani, was great and a good time was had by all. Two members of the first batch of CP alumni, Mr. Prasit Tansuwan and Mr. Niphon Saipetch, were at the event. Other luminaires are former Bangkok governor candidate Kriengsak Chareonwongsak, former deputy minister of education Sirikorn Maneerin, and internationally known economic professor Pasuk Phongpaichit. We also met some people we haven't met for some 40 years like P' Ajaree Phekanant Homsethi who trained us to dance the Soeng Kratip at the 1969 Thai night in Sydney (she's second right in the photo, next to Sutee).

Regards,
Chuvej

More about CP 60th Anniversary Evening

Dear Chuvej,
Thank you very much for the photo and the recap of the evening.
I could not join the function last night as I am being affected by the flood and could not get to the Aust Embassy eventhough I would have liked very much to participate in this getting together.
Best regards,
Winai

Thanks, Chuvej, for your concise yet descriptive narration of the event.
Wiwat
Yet-to-be-flooded Hat Yai

Dear All,
Thank you Chuvej for very good and very quick report.
I would like to add the following;
There were more than 50 alumni attending the party. I talked to Khun Radkao and she informed me that, before the flood crisis, more than 100 alumni confirmed to attend the party. Unfortunately, more than 50 persons cancelled due to the flooding problem. She also mentioned that Vute had to cancel his flight from Sydney. We know that many of our CP69 friends, such as Winai,Wiwat,Pongsak, could not attend the function due to the flood promblem. Anyway 6 of us were the biggest group to join the function.
I was asked(by Dr. Uthomporn,President of TATSC) to talk to the guests inviting them to join the TATSC. I also told the audience about our CP69 keeping in touch and have regular meetings and about our 40th Anniversary Book and gave one copy to the Embassador(for this action,I apologize to our CP69 friends for not getting your prior approval). Anyway, the Ambassador and his staff seemed very surprised that we could make such a book and they expressed their appreciation for our book. Vute, you should be very proud of yourself and we all are very proud of you for initiating and completed the book)
In the photo attached by Chuvej, may I add that the gentleman standing behind Tat is P'Nu,on Tat's left is Santi(CP70),next to Santi is P'Tum,wife of P'Sitthichai.
I attached some pictures taken by my camera.
Best Regards,
Wichit

Dear Friends,
Thank you very much Chuvej and Wichit for the lovely photos. May I add that there were two official photographers. One gave us instant prints which were of very high quality. However, they need to be scanned, so after we've done that, perhaps they can be sent out to friends as well. Another official photographer said he would write all the photos of the event on to CDs and Khun Radklao will mail them off to us later. May I also add, that the Ambassador's story about Phar Lap was new to me. Of course, everyone knows the famous horse, and movies have been made about him, but I never associated the horse's name with Thailand. The name is actually the Thai word for 'lightning'! Vute's collection of photos, sent by CD, was one of the highlights of the night. There was a slide show of photos that Khun Radklao was able to collect, and the largest collection was from Vute! In all, it was a fun event, and Wichit and I were conspiring to have the Embassy host something like this more often)
Cheers,
Ying

Dear friends,
I have made' reply to all 'to Chuvej's email and attached pictures taken from my camera.Last night, the Australian Embassy employed a team of professional photographers with computer and printer. After each picture was taken, they made hard copy prints of high quality for each person in the picture in just a few minutes,it was very efficient and impressive(oh yes, each picture was in hard-paper frame with the Australian Embassy Logo!-very nice). I heard they may organize the function again next year-if the Thai Government can quarantee no flooding!
Talking about flooding, the situations in and around BKK are only getting more serious(worse) . Without declaring the Emergency Decree, the Goverment could not contol people who break up dykes or water sluices or the fighting between people on opposite side of water dikes. Being unable to stop people from breaking key water sluices, the BMA can not now quarantee the heart of BKK city, such as Pleonchit,Ratchprasong,Silom and Sathon from flooding.
A reporter asked the Army Commander in Chief that the Government do not want to declare Emergency Decree(which will give more power to the military) because they fear a coup d'etat ? The Army C in C replied something like this."Are you crazy, the water is up to our necks now,how can we think of such thing?" The public acknowledged and appreciated the hard working and the displine of those soldiers who worked tirelessly helping the flood victims.
Stay tuned,as long as I can report from my office.
Wichit

Khoonavute back in BKK

Dear friends,
Khoonavute and Kularp have moved back to BKK. I have invited them to join us on Sunday 26. Lin and Chuvej have also confirmed to join. I hope many more of us can join to celebrate our 42th anniversary.
Regarding the Sawangkanives project, Ar and I have booked a unit on Sat, after we were quite sure that we don't have to immediately move in after the completion of construction and the Red Cross won't kick us out if we are bed-ridden. Aw (previous from Sydney) and a friend also booked 2 units in the same building with us (Bld. B1). I attached an article on this project for further information.
Cheers,
Wichit

Getting together with Jeab

15 May 2011

Dear Friends,

We had a very nice lunch today at the Polo Club. In attendance were: Jeab, Lin, Chuvej, Wichit, Ar, and Ying. Please see attached photos. Wichit will send more tomorrow.
Please note the poster of Beatles Night on Friday June 3, 2011. It caught Wichit's eye instantly, so we are planning another get-together with nostalgic Beatles music to sing or dance to if anyone feels inclined. If you would like to join us, please reply by Wednesday May 18. Tables get sold out very quickly, and so reservations need to be made by Thursday May 19 at the very latest.

Cheers,
Ying

16 May 2011
Dear friends,
I would like to add some photos taken outside the Polo Club. (Ying, you were right, the pictures are blurred due to the inexperience of the maid who took the pictures for us,sorry for this)
The next get-together will be for lunch on Sunday 26 at Pongsak's sister's restaurant(Nonthaburi) when Dua will be in BKK. Pongsak,is there a chance to try the famous Nonthaburi Durian at that time ?
Just for information,at 17.00 same day,Ar,I and Winai went to the royally sponsored cremation ceremony of P'Noo(Peerasak)' mother at Wat Thad Thong, when we met P'Kasien,P'Sitthichai,P'Thepchai.

New member of Siri/Chart's Family

Dear Friends,

I am happy to share with you some good news in our family - the arrival of our second grandson, "Darcy Sirichart Rosemont". Our daughter Parisra gave birth to Darcy on 12th April, and as you can see in the photos attached, he is a very healthy and happy baby. Darcy is very easy to please, spending most of his time sleeping and feeding. He is lucky to have a lot of loving hands to hold him, including from his big brother Oliver who is going to turn three years old in couple of months. Hope you have a great day.

Cheers

Beautiful golf course in Hua Hin

Hi friends,

I could not resist to share pictures of the Black Mountain golf course in Hua Hin which I played last Saturday. It is so beautiful and so well-maintained, really up to world standard. There were plenty of birds, and also a strikingly-looking lizard in the golf course, as attached photo.
I know there are people who are against golf courses for some reasons, but there are merits for them also.

At least, I hope you enjoy the greenary.

Cheers,
Wichit

Wichit and Ar sharing their travel

Good Deeds Indeed

News about Jeab from Tyler, Texas (28 March 2011)

On Saturday morning I worked with a mission group. We worked on putting together care packages for Japanese victims, towels and wash-clothes, comb and toothbrushes and band-aids, stuffs like that. While I was working, a woman with a camera man walked over and introduced herself as someone from CBS and asked me what I was doing, etc. I told her that I have young grandchildren and it breaks me when I see children in Japan suffer. I told her I sent Red Cross a check last week but it certainly does not feel the same as folding and wrapping stuffs knowing that some one will benefit from something that came from my hand. I forgot what else I said but she said that is so beautiful and would I mind if she wires me and interviews me on camera.

The woman put a microphone down the front of my shirt and let is drop and then wired it to something that she attached to my back pocket. Then she asked me to only look at her and not at the camera while she talked to me. So now you know it is easy to be in the news when you live in a little town of Tyler.

Wichit

Please forward this to all of our CP friends.

It is with a heavy heart that I write to inform all of my CP friends of the death of my beloved son Andrew. He passed away in his sleep on the morning of March 8th from a heart problem which was unknown to all of us. The family was devastated by this unexpected loss however we are now at the stage where we accept that he is gone. We have already had a cremation ceremony. This Saturday March 26 we are holding a Memorial Service for his many friends in Philadelphia. A similar service will be held in Boulder Colorado on April 2. Andrew touched the life of many people during his 25 years of life. We will miss him immensely.

Prinya's father's royal cremation

27 February 2011

Dear friends,

With the popularity of Face Book,I feel old-fashioned now to write this email. Ar and Ying have aready put these photos in CP69 face book created by Ying.

Anyway,a few of us attended the royal cremation yesterday, including Wiwat from Songkla and Piti from Khon Khen. Prinya expressed his appreciation for our CP69 attendance of the ceremony. We had a good chat and catching up before and after the ceremony. Prinya invited CP69 friends to visit Khon Khen and stay at his home. Since Toi will be in BKK again in November, maybe we should organize an over night trip to visit Prinya and Piti during that time. The weather should be nice and cool then and we can visit interesting places on the way to Khon Khen. Any one interested ? The next places to visit should be Chaingmai and Songkla.

Please note in phto no.DSCO3578,the the two young ladies on the far lelt and far right are daughters of Prinya and Tim(second from left and next to Panit), the elder daughter is already a medical doctor and the younger daughter is a third year medical student, the handsome young man standing between Prinya and Ying is Piti's second son,Ping, who just got back from doing master degree in Sydney.

I also would like to report that Mingsarn kindly sent books written by her to my condo by urgent mail on Saturday so that I could distribute them to our friends on Sunday. The book is about Mingsarn's extensive trips around the world written under the pen name of "Mae Ma Num"(Sea Horse Mother).I still have a few copies with me for our friends when we meet next time.I found it very informative and entertaining to read. Thank you very much,Mingsarn.

That is all for now folks,

Wichit

Yasi Aftermath

Dear friends
I sat out this ferocious cyclone for 7 hours from 11 pm till 4 in the morning buffeted and lashed by Yasi the whole period. Dee elected to sleep out instead while I kept a vigil on the situation during the night.
We (plus our sheltie, Jasper, our dog ) have just emerged from our bunker (the smallest and strongest bathroom) this morning, Thursday. Dee had her Campbell tin broth for brekkie and I reached out for my 2 minute noodle. Fortunately, we use gas for cooking, just as well, because I lost power the previous evening.
Toi rang me yesterday and this morning.... which was nice...thanks.
Let me tell you this. You would not wish this experience on anyone. IT WAS HAIR-RAISING , nail biting AND VERY DICEY. I felt so small during the ordeal and literally prayed for the divine intervention.
Our abode did not sustain any damage. The roof is still intact.
I am at the shop right now. It is a OK as expected. And , we will resume trading tomorrow and get back to normality ASAP. Electricity for commercial district is in order.
Thanks for all your thoughts , concern and prayers. I received all of the above one hundred percent. And I am grateful.
Cheers,
Dee and Jee

Yasi is threathening our friends in QLD

Jee and Sunthorn although escaped the Queensland Great Flood in Dec-Jan, they now have to brace against Cyclone Yasi, which is a lot bigger than Larry that hit Qld in 2006. Let's hope that Lucks are on their side again.
http://www.abc.net.au/news/infographics/storify.htm?id=preparations-for-cyclone-yasi

Dear friends,
Dee and I are in for a rough ride for the next 24 hrs.
Thanks for emails and all the prayers.
This imminent cyclone Yasi has just been upgraded to Super Cyclone (Category 5, highest rating) early this morning. Wind speed at 295 km/hr. It is the mother of all cyclones ever in Australia, 5 times bigger than Larry (2006)which wiped out the town Innisfail and 3 times bigger than Tracey (1974) that annihilated Darwin.
Dee and I stayed at home today battening down the hatches, bunkering down and preparing all survival essentials to sustain us for at least one week. We had been thru' Larry, hence we know the drill.
This evening (Bkk time) at 7 pm while you all settle down for dinner, Yasi will have slammed our coastline just south of Cairns and another hour to Atherton another hour to ride out the eye (35 km wide) and some 2 hours for the tail to pass. You may take a peek the weather map. It is really bigger than Ben Hur.
The worst case scenario for us will be losing the roof over our heads because the house roof was only designed for Cat 4. Perhaps, it will give us the chance to start building our house all over again.
I am not concerned about the shop as it commercially built with all steel structures.
Self-preservation is the order of the day at the moment.
Will write to you all later.
Cheers
Jee and DEE

ไม่ว่าคุณจะรู้สึกอย่างไรในตอนเช้าของทุกวัน, จงลุก จากเตียง, แต่ง ตัวและ ปรากฎตัวต่อหน้าคนที่เราร่วมงาน ด้วย... get up, dress up and show up.

Flood and Snow & CP69 Friends

NEWS FROM AUSTRALIA

Hi All

Both Jee and Sunthorn are OK and in good spirit, compared with most of the Queenslanders. Both of their homes were not flooded, but their life styles are inconveniently affected by the surrounding floods. Jee told me that the supply of basic things that we normally take for grant like vegies and petrol are running low because all the major roads are cut off. I asked him about his shoes business; he said that the demand is still strong, but he couldn't get the supply! Sunthorn is also living in a wet land at the moment, plenty of water everywhere but not flooded. He has to park his car near the main road (about 100-200 metres from his home) because the home-made dirt road into his property has turned into a mud track. Overall our friends are surviving well, but have to adjust their life style to fit the wet surroundings. In fact when I was in Thailand last November, the situations in many regions (specially in Hat Yai) were similar to what the Queenslanders are facing now. It makes me wonder where the world is heading, because we seem to break a new record of disasters every year. Anyway forget about the doom and gloom; I hope you all enjoy the upcoming Korat trip, wish I can be there too.

Cheers
Siri

NEWS FROM USA

Dear Wichit and friends,

It has been and still is fairly cold in the DC area. It is warming up now (around freezing as opposed to well below freezing). We had only a few inches of snow during Xmas. We were lucky as the bulk went up north and may have affected Wanee somewhat. In Atlanta, where Gareth is currently studying, they had 4-10 inches of snow which turned to ice later. The snow fell on warm ground and melted. The slush later froze. Atlanta was paralyzed for a few days.

Hope you all enjoy another get together. I am envious. Take plenty of photos.

Regards,
Dua

Joining the Golden 60 Club

I got my membership early in the week and many lovely wishes from family and friends all around. Thank you.

Jenny managed to surprise me when I walked into a local tennis courts and club house supposingly to have a game of tennis with my son Tarnin and daughter Nalyn before going out to dinner. Well there were friends, young and old, to help me celebrating my birthday and have a game or two of tennis.

Amongst them were my former landlady, Mrs Murchie, Moi & Poobate, Chart & Siri, Graeme Crookham, many of my ex-CSIRO colleagues, ex and current neighbours and many family friends. I also got a call from my Mum and sister during the party.

What a great way for me to join the Golden 60 Club.

Happy New Year Mingsan

Etched in my mind a lady from Canberra
One of the greatest from Thai terra
Since then a CMU full professor
Recently arranged her delightful daughter
Married to a prince charming, Bravo ! Viva !
She wished she could emulate my obsession
But many a friends would yield confession
That her competency, no compare
Her capability, no one dare
To compete the wonders in her possession
Happy New Year, Mingsan.

Wanee

Ho , Ho, Ho, dear friends,
Merridee,Tusanee and I heartily extend the Merriest of Christmas and the Luckiest of New Year to you everywhere around the globe. May you and your loved ones enjoy this festive season, prosper, stay healthy and get lucky always?
Here, in the deep north, our Christmas spirits are somewhat dampened by 2 weeks of torrential rain. It has been bucketing relentlessly for the duration. I am sick of it . My dog is sick of it. And almost everyone in our little hamlet is sick of it. Am I still standing? It is more like floating and trying to keep my head above water. The weather forecast predicts continuous drenching over Christmas and New Year. LOvely!
Once again, Ho Ho Ho
Jee

As dawns the New Year,
To my CP69 friends all things nice,
May everyone and those you hold dear,
Be happy, wealthy, and wise.
